Overview of Course

About Electronic and Automation Course

This program is specially designed for practicing engineers in the Electronics, Electronics Technology, and Automation industry as well for fresh bachelor graduates who are aiming a career in those areas. The program will provide a sound knowledge, versatility, and make the students updated in these respective areas of study. The course starts with the PG Diploma; the first year, three-semester program, which includes the taught courses, assignments, projects, and presentations. Students will learn thoroughly about electronic system design, controller synthesis and implementation, embedded systems, microcontroller-PLCs-FPGA based designs with hands on exercises. After successful completion of the PG Diploma, students are eligible to carryout a research project over a duration of one year on part-time basis in order to pursue the MSc degree.

Eligibility Requirements

The minimum eligibility requirements to follow the prescribed programme leading to the Postgraduate Diploma, is one of the following qualifications:

  1. The Degree of Bachelor of the Science of Engineering of the University of Moratuwa specializing in Electronics/Electrical/Mechanical/Computer Engineering, OR
  2. Any other engineering degree of at least four years full-time duration or equivalent, from a recognized University, in a relevant field as may be judged by the Faculty of Engineering and approved by the Senate, OR
  3. Any recognized category of membership of a recognized Professional Institute, obtained through an academic route, with a minimum of one year of recognized appropriate experience obtained after the membership, as may be approved by the Senate, subject to successful performance in the placement examination of the programme, OR
  4. A minimum three year full-time degree from a recognized University, specializing in a relevant field, and a minimum one year experience in a relevant field after graduation, both as may be judged by the Faculty of Engineering and approved by the Senate, subject to successful performance in the placement examination of the programme.

Course Registration

Course Fees

PG Diploma tuition fees can be paid in not more than 3 instalments. And also tuition fees for each semester has to be paid before the semester begins.

MSc tuition fees should be paid before the commencement of the MSc research project.

All payments should be maid in favour of the “Bursar University of Moratuwa” Bank of Ceylon Account 70993353. Payments can also be made easily at the Shroff’s counter of the University of Moratuwa.

Please avoid ATM deposits. ONLINE fund transfers are available only from BOC accounts.
If you are going to pay through a cheque please hand over the cheque to Mr. Damith Kandage.

  • Minimum of 40 credits is the requirement for successful completion of PG Diploma.
  • Minimum 40 credits makes the student eligible to continue pursuing MSc degree.
  • Core modules (42hrs/semester) earn 3 credits each.
  • Elective modules (28hrs/semester) earn 2 credits each.
  • Mini Research Project earns 2credits/semester and runs through the first two semesters.
  • Design Project earns 2credits/semester and runs through all three semesters.

Rules

Assignments

Late submissions will have a penalty decided by the examiner.

Attendance

Minimum of 70% is Required for graduation. If this minimum attendance is not met, reasons should be provided for senate approval.

Examinations

Minimum 50% is required from written paper and Continuous Assessment to pass the subject modules. Second attempt of any subject module will earn maximally a C+ Senate approval is required to skip an exam. Only two attempts are allowed for any subject module (special approval is required for more) Serious illness is considered an exception to above rule. In such a situation, a telegram and a medical certified by the University of Moratuwa Medical officer is required to be produced for senate approval.

Overseas Visits

Approval is required before you leave the country, especially when you are going to be abroad during examinations.

Application Process

Please send by post the following documents.

  • Duly filled application form (First two pages only)
  • Certified copies of the followings documents:
    • Degree certificate *
    • Transcripts *
    • IESL membership certificate (applicable only for those who apply through the professional category)
    • Birth Certificate
    • NIC or passport.
  • UGC form “Recognition of foreign universities and recognition of other qualifications”(only for foreign degree holders).
  • Payment slip of Application processing fee and entrance exam fee (entrance exam fee is only applicable for three years degree holders, and applicants applying only under the professional qualifications category ).

* These two documents must be certified by the relevant educational institute.

Softcopy of the duly filled application form should be uploaded using the given online form. Also, the Application package should be posted to: (emails are not accepted)

Applicants, who have obtained a bachelors degree or any other relevant educational qualification from a foreign university (including local non-state universities affiliated to foreign universities), are required to submit the certificate of “Recognition of foreign universities and recognition of other qualifications” issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Sri Lanka. Please visit the UGC website for further information on applying for a certificate of recognition of foreign institute.
