The Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, having a set of students with high academic qualifications, is one of the most competitive places in Sri Lanka. But this competitiveness is not limited only to analytical skills and terse electronic equipment. It will be very evident for someone lucky enough to visit an “ABHINA”. It is an annual entertainment event that comprises anything from dancing and music to stage performance.
Abhina is a famous event within the University of Moratuwa, where winning will make your team a set of heroes overnight. The practice and perfection within the performances of this event are unparalleled. It has become a place to unravel hidden aesthetic skills for ENTC students, who have spent a lifetime away from aesthetics. Ever since 2014, they have been revealing their impeccable talents on the Abhina stage.
The Department of Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering at the University of Moratuwa successfully organized Abhina ’23 on October 10, 2023. This event celebrated the talents of students and staff under the theme of “Thovil,” a traditional Sri Lankan belief. Mr. Janak Premalal, a renowned actor, graced the occasion as the chief guest, alongside academic staff, alumni, industry representatives, and students from various departments. Abhina featured performances from all three department batches, including songs, dances, musical events, and short dramas like “Doladuka.ai,” which captivated the audience. The event was broadcast live on social media, extending its reach. The chief guest commended the importance of such events, praising the efforts of the ENTC crew and the students’ exceptional performances. Abhina ’23 highlighted the department’s diverse talents, showcasing excellence beyond technical fields.
In 2019, on March 28th, the civil auditorium was breathtakingly beautiful due to all the decorations done by the department of ENTC for Abina 2019. Famous and award-winning actress Duleeka Marapana graced the event as the Chief Guest. As customary, the event consisted of singing, dancings and acting, which were clear signals for the hidden talents of our students. It was the last Abhina before the hit of the Covid 19 pandemic.
On May 9th of 2018, the Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering decided to hold the 5th unfoldment of “Abhina”. Due to its established recognition within the university, the number of spectators was higher than ever. The civil auditorium where the event took place was almost packed. Every form of artists, including dancers, singers and actors of ENTC, came on stage to colour the night.
Abhina was yet again brought up to the stage in 2017 for the fourth consecutive year by the department of ENTC. The chief guest of the prestigious night was none other than the famous actor and the film director Ggiriraj Kaushalya. The most significant thing in the event was the first-ever participation from all four batches in the department for the battle for the Abhina crown.
Abhina was held for the third consecutive time on 18th May 2016 by the collective efforts of the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications with the theme of “මැවිසුරු හදට රඟ මඬල”. The chief guest of the event was Mr Janak Premalal, a famous and honourable actor in Sri Lanka.
New improvements on top of the previous years were quite evident. Abhina was becoming The place to show your skills to the department and to hone them to perfection. The efforts of Abhina 2017 was able to get this event a good recognition within the university.
Following the immense success of the first-ever Abhina in 2014, the department of ENTC decided to hold it for the second time in 2015. Renowned actor Mr Rodney Warnakula himself graced us with his presence as the chief guest. His comments about this event were really significant. “කියල වැඩක් නෑ, ලියලම තියන්න ඕන…”.
The performance was just jaw-dropping. The event became longer, grander and more entertaining than the first time. The number of aesthetic skills they showcased as a set of students who are the best in terms of analytical skills was unheard of before. Hats off to everyone who contributed. Kudos to the organizers and performers who made the night entertaining.
In 2014 the Department of Electronics and Telecommunication set forth a new venture to bring all the aesthetically talented students of our department to a single stage, to reveal their hidden talents and give them the spotlight. Although it was a new idea back then, Abhina gave a solid foundation for all the events in the coming years.
It became a huge hit right from the beginning. Students were able to entertain themselves while uplifting the artistic capabilities of the department.
