The Electronic Club of the Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering department organizes various workshops to educate students in various sectors such as Robotics, Embedded Systems, etc. These workshops have helped many students to gain knowledge and showcase their talents. These workshops have been a great success every year.
SLRC Webots Workshops
SLRC Webots workshops 2021 was organized parallel with the Sri Lankan Robotics Challenge 2021. The workshop series was carried out for five weeks in both Sinhala and Tamil mediums.
The first workshop was an introductory session where participants were given the guidance to install Webots. Additionally, Tinkercad platform was introduced and they were guided through the activities of blinking an LED, motor rotation and ultrasonic simulation.
Second workshop was intended to familiarize the participants with Webots. First lesson was creating a new project. From that the participants were guided step by step through the activities adding floor, creating solid shapes, creating solid groups, adding sample robot (e-puck) and finally, adding object avoiding code to e-puck
Third workshop was focused on adding sample 4 wheel robots, creating new code and adding sample object avoid code to a four wheel robot.
Fourth session was about adding new distance sensors to the sample robot and getting readings from new sensors.
In the final workshop, participants were trained to create their own simple wall following maze by using solids and write a simple wall following code for a sample robot. SLRC Webots workshops 2021 concluded sharing a pool of knowledge to the robotics enthusiastic community.
SLRC Workshop
The initial workshops were held in Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya, Colombo Workshop and Kegalu Vidyalaya. The Final workshop organized by the Department of Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering, University of Moratuwa as a preparation session for “Sri Lankan Robotics Challenge 2019” was successfully held with the participation of over 150 tech-enthusiastic school students from all over the country on 9th of August at the department.
Participants were given a thorough understanding and hands-on experiences about designing and building a successful robot as well as the concepts of robot design, building and algorithms. The event was followed by a showcase of robots designed and built by undergraduates of the department.
SLRC Workshop
“Robotics for Beginners” school workshop series was organized as a parallel session for “Sri Lankan Robotics Challenge 2018” by the Department of Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering, University of Moratuwa.
Equipped with the experiences gained from the past six years, the E Club, had identified the necessity of spreading the emerging Robotics Technology among school students. The Electronic Cub launched Provincial Robotics Workshops throughout the island. Starting from fundamentals, these workshops featured a range of robotics applications giving hands-on experience to the participants.
The objectives of the workshops were to promote the awareness about the robotics technology in the country across selected target groups in a more effective manner and faster than any typical education system, to build craving in young minds from a tender age to develop a passion towards these technical arenas, to encourage the local community to be innovative and to face the challenges without hesitation and to patronage towards the spreading of the emerging robotics technology within Sri Lanka
Our partnership with the Ministry of Education immensely increased the value of the workshops as it was recognized as a collaborative effort of the Ministry and the University by the school students and the society as a whole. Moreover, providing island wide coverage for the workshops was much more convenient with the partnership.
The first of the workshop series was held at Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda on the 22nd of April 2018. The second workshop was held at Musaeus College, Colombo 07 on the 4th and 5th of July 2018. Workshops were held at Weeraketiya Central College, Basnagala Maha Vidyalaya, Deraniyagala on the 24th and 28th of July respectively. Another workshop was held at the Ministry of Education,Isurupaya on the 23rd and 24th of August 2018.
The Sixth workshop of the series was held at Bandaranayake College, Gampaha on the 14th September 2018. Workshops were held at Rahula College, Matara, Hillwood College, Kandy, Hindu College, Jaffna, Eheliyagoda Central College, Central College, Kuliyapitiya and Teachers Training School, Panideniya covering school children interested in robotics all over the island with the Guidance of the Ministry of Education. A booklet was also published about the workshops done.
SLRC Workshop
As with all developing countries, students of Sri Lanka are not exposed to the latest technologies. To introduce the wonders of microprocessors and to unleash the limitless possibilities by untapping the creativity in our students, these robotics workshops are conducted.
From August 2017 to December 2017, our team organized and conducted six workshops for over 160 students from over 20 schools.
The first workshop on Robotics for school students was held in Dambulla. Students from Rangiri Dambulla National School – Dambulla, D.S Senanayake M.V – Erawula Junction Dambulla, Weera Mohan Jayamaha M.V – Dambulugama Dambulla, Weera Vijaya Wimalarathna M.V – Inamaluwa Dambulla, Medabedda M.V – Wasalakotte, Weera Keppetipola National School – Akuramboda and Mahabodhi Secondary School – Pallepola participated in this workshop.
The Second workshop on Robotics for school students was held in Matale. Students from St. Thomas Boys College – Matale, Buddhaghosha M.V – Palapathwala Matale, Hindu National School – Matale, Sri Sanghamitta Balika M.V – Matale, Weera Parackrama M.V – Yatalawaththa Matale, Government Science College – Matale and Madawala Ulpatha M.V – Madawala Matale participated in this workshop.
Workshops were also held in Kanthale and Galewela. The final School Workshop of Sri Lankan Robotics Challenge 2017, a full day workshop based on fundamentals of Robotics for beginners and school students was held on 18th November at university premises. This workshop was conducted by level 2 students of the Department of Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering , University of Moratuwa.
SLRC Workshop
Workshops on robotics for school students parallel to the Sri Lanka Robotics Challenge 2016 were held from the 30th September to the 22nd of October 2016 at Rahula College, Royal College, Nalanda College, Ananda College, Hillwood College and Maris Stella College.
A full day workshop on Robotics for beginners and school students was held on 29th October at university premises. This workshop was conducted by level 2 students of the Department of Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering , University of Moratuwa.
SLRC School Workshops
This year the Electronic and Telecommunication Department of the University of Moratuwa set forth a new venture to enhance the knowledge on robotics and raise awareness for school students who participate in the SLRC 2014. This novel approach had a participation of over 120 school students.
Robotics workshop
A single day workshop on Robotics for Young Inventors was conducted by ENTC on the 08th Nov 2014. The event was organized by Sri Lanka Inventors Commission for the National Science Week starting from 04th of November. The objective of the workshop is to introduce the Field of Robotics to the Young Inventors and to give them hands-on experience in Simple Robot Making.
IET/IEEE School Workshop
This is a session organized by the IET Sri Lankan Network and IEEE Sri Lanka section, with the theme of “School workshop and seminar on Electronic”. This was conducted by the Electronics and Telecommunications Department of the University of Moratuwa. It was held on 08th May 2014, at the Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, University of Moratuwa.
