On frequency domain adaptive filters using the overlap-add method
Abstract
Frequency Domain Adaptive Filters (FDAFs) are an important subject of current research in digital signal processing. One of the main reasons is that FDAFs have the ability to reduce complexity, especially when the filter length becomes very large. In Adaptive Filter (AF) configurations a convolution and a correlation have to be carried out. These operations can be done by using overlap methods in combination with Discrete Fourier Transforms (DFTs). Two well-known overlap methods are the so-called overlap-save and the overlap-add method. In literature 111 it is stated that for AF configurations the overlap-save method is to be preferred to the overlap-add method for complexity reasons. By introducing a new FDAF structure we will show that this statement is not correct and that an FDAF using the overlap-add method can be realized with the same number of DFTs as the FDAF using the overlap-save method
Advances in Computer Graphics Hardware II
Abstract
The material in this book documents the presented papers, the discussions and additional contributions triggered by the EUROGRAPHICS workshop on Graphics Hardware held at the annual conference EG'87 in Amsterdam. The first part considers Algorithmic Aspects of graphics systems realisation. It is worthwhile to note that besides" classical" topics like Hidden-line Elimination or Ray-Tracing, new results of computional geometry are presented in a hardware-oriented context. The second part on Subsystems describes hardware solutions for special tasks in the computer image generation pipeline, eg fast coordinate transformation and perspective projection. The last part addresses System Architecture. It demonstrates by rather different examples the wide range of possible and feasible solutions to build graphics hardware. Unlike the situation in graphics software where a common understanding and an accepted concept has been formed by the standardization process, many architectural options are still to be exploited and evaluated. Especially the interaction between VLSI opportunities, newly developed algorithms, and the increasing diversity of applications encourage again and again innovative solutions and keep graphics hardware a lively working area.

IMAGE RETRIEVAL USING LARGE-CENTRE-REGIONS
Abstract
In this work, a new histogram refinement technique, Large Centre Regions (LCR) Refinement, and a new region representation technique, LCR Sets, based on colour regions are presented. These methods extract a predefined number of largest regions at the centre of an image and match other images emphasizing this property. The LCR Refinement effectively represents large centre regions of an image. In addition to this, LCR Sets represent basic information about the shape of a region, thus, extra distinguishing capability among different images can be achieved. Since the regions at the centre are given the emphasis for matching, the effect of the background can be minimized as well, as the background often lies outside the centre zone. Experimental results show 20% average improvement in ranks with LCR Refinement compared to Histogram. By combining LCR Sets with either Histogram or LCR Refinement …

Resource Constrained Method for Digitizing Existing Volumetric Water Meters
Abstract
The current water meters in Sri Lanka are manually read monthly, consuming more expenditure on human resources by the water board of Sri Lanka. As a solution to that problem, automating and digitizing the water meter can be presented. In order to read out the digits on the water meter more conveniently and effectively in a resource constrained environment, a low-cost imaged based direct reading system is presented in this paper. This system can automatically identify the digits on the water meter through a template matching algorithm. After recognizing the digits of the water meter reading, the processed meter reading output is transferred to a central server via Narrow-Band Internet of Things (NB-IoT) technology. Recently, NB-IoT is one of the most promising Low Power Wide Area technology which has attracted much attention from both academia and industry.
COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF MACHINE LEARNING ALGORITHMS TO PREDICT THE BOND SHEAR STRESS BETWEEN CFRP AND CONCRETE
Abstract
Externally bonded Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) systems have emerged as a reliable solution for upgrading the mechanical performance and durability of reinforced concrete structures. However, the interfacial bond strength between CFRP and concrete is a critical factor governing the overall performance of these strengthening systems. Inadequate bonding can result in premature debonding, thereby diminishing the load-bearing capacity and compromising structural integrity. This study examines the impact of key geometric and material parameters including bond length, bond width, CFRP thickness, concrete compressive strength and CFRP stiffness on the interfacial bond strength of CFRP–concrete systems. A detailed literature review was undertaken to identify the most influential bond parameters, and a comprehensive dataset of 855 experimental results was compiled from previous studies. Four supervised machine learning algorithms Support Vector Machine (SVM), Gamma Likelihood (GL), Random Forest (RF) and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB) were employed to develop predictive models. Model performance was assessed using the Coefficient of Determination (R²), Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and Mean Squared Error (MSE). The results indicate that the ML models, particularly XGB and RF, achieved superior prediction accuracy, demonstrating their potential as effective tools for practical structural engineering applications. Overall, this research underscores the importance of data-driven methods in enhancing the evaluation and design of CFRP-strengthened concrete structures.

EPITOMIZE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BOND PARAMETERS AND SHEAR STRENGTH OF CFRP/CONCRETE COMPOSITES
Abstract
The use of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) for the strengthening and restoration of concrete structures has gained a significant rise in recent years. The effectiveness of CFRP as a strengthening material is highly dependent on the quality of the bond between the CFRP and the concrete substrate. Extensive research has been conducted on evaluating bond performance for a variety of geometries and materials. However, the identification of variations in bond performance with respect to bond sensitive parameters, such as geometric dimensions of the bond and material properties of CFRP, epoxy and concrete, will provide clear guidance to strengthen future applications. A comprehensive data set was collected from previous studies on bond shear performance. The data was analyzed for critical bond parameters. The results emphasized the importance of careful design considerations when implementing CFRP systems in concrete structures. Considering future development, integrating Machine Learning (ML) approaches to enhance the understanding of these complex interactions is highlighted.
Challenges of Optimizing Common Alerting Protocol for SMS based GSM Devices in Last-Mile Hazard Warnings in Sri Lanka
Abstract
There is a growing call for the use of open source content standards for all-hazards, all-media alert and notification systems. This paper presents findings on the implementation of Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) as a content standard for a community-based hazard information network in Sri Lanka. CAP is being deployed as part of the HazInfo project, which has established last-mile networking capability for 32 tsunami-affected villages in Sri Lanka in order to study the suitability of various Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) for a standardsbased community hazard information system. Results to date suggest that the basic internetworking arrangement at lower technical layers has proven to be reasonably robust and reliable but that a key challenge remains in the upper layers of application software and content provision. This is evident in the apparent difficulties faced when implementing CAP messaging over multiple last-mile systems that include GSM Technology in modes of text messaging. Lessons learned from silent tests and live exercises point to several key bottlenecks in the system where the integrity of CAP messages is compromised due to problems associated with technological boundaries, technical difficulties, software interoperability or direct human intervention. The wider implication of this finding is that content standards by themselves are not sufficient to support appropriate and timely emergency response activities. Those working with content standards for hazard information systems must consider closely the interoperability issues at various layers of interconnectivity. It is also evident that before Cell Broadcasting …

Cellular Intercom
Abstract
The Cellular Intercom enables users to make voice calls among themselves within a local area, using Bluetooth enabled mobile phones. It is an enterprise solution which enables people to use their mobile phones as a wireless intercom or PABX within their office premises. Conventional PABX or intercom systems provide terminals to the office desks of employees. If a person is not at his/her desk, he/she is unreachable. The Cellular Intercom is an attractive alternative for such environments, providing flexibility, ease of use and mobility within the office premises.
Mobile Positioning With the Aid of Network Planning Tool
Abstract
This paper presents the results of work carried out to apply and evaluate the use of network planning tool predictions to the Database Correlation Method (DCM), for location estimation in cellular environments. In Database Correlation Method (DCM), the location dependent signal information seen by a mobile station is stored in a database in a form of fingerprints. During the location estimation, the measured signal sample is compared with the fingerprints stored in the database to come up with an accurate estimation. Even though the method has proven superior in accuracy over other cellular positioning techniques, the higher demanding effort involved in database formation using field measurements has become a big challenge which prevents the technique being deployed in large dynamic networks. Formation of a database using the predictions from the network planning tools or theoretical propagation models would be a possible solution for the issue. Then, the motivation arises to evaluate the accuracy of the method using predicted fingerprints instead of measured ones.
