Abstract

The paper describes the design and development of an alarm device that can disseminate disaster early warnings to threatened communities over the GSM network. The device is capable of generating audible, high-volume alarms, flashlights and turning on an in-built radio in response to a warning message from an authorized entity via GSM's short message service (SMS) or cell broadcast (CB). The design of the device follows international guidelines on emergency communications, such as the ability to reach a large number of people very fast, awaken sleeping communities, and be able to acknowledge warning messages. The alarm has been designed as a last-mile technology in a larger disaster early warning network (DEWN). It is intended to be place in selected locations such as police stations, places of religious places and community centres. Thus the DEWN system and thus the alarm device presents a …

Abstract

The paper describes a system to automate the monitoring and recording of rainfall using cellular network infrastructure. The paper describes the hardware and the software components and the data communication aspects of the design, and their integration as a complete system. Ancient Sri Lanka had been proud for centuries, of a very successful agricultural economy. Today, even though Agriculture still plays a key role in the Sri Lankan Economy, the agricultural sector has failed to keep up with the adoption of advancing technology and has thus fallen behind many other developing nations. Weather information such as rainfall is critical for successful agricultural activities. Unfortunately present methods of monitoring such information utilize manual observation and recording of data which is highly error-prone. Automation of these monitoring methods can not only increase the reliability, but also improve the timely availability of data, and hence contribute significantly to the betterment of agriculture in day-to-day activities as well as to long-term planning. The system consists of rain gauges with wireless interfaces and a central station. The rainfall information is transferred via SMS (Short Message Service) messages to the central station via a GSM cellular network. The information is received in a database at the central station and can be accessed via the Internet, and the data analyzed.

Abstract

The design and implementation of a low cost bell and light protection system for a railway level crossing is described. This is directly targeted to cater for the un protected level crossings in Sri Lanka. The design is entirely hardware oriented. It detects the presence of a train on the rail track to activate a set of red lights and a bell to warn the road users. To enhance the reli ability of the system, the electrical continuity of the rail track is also monitored.

Abstract

Construction of new highways or expansion of existing highways to meet the everincreasing highway traffic is a very expensive and time-consuming task Management of existing highways effectively is considered as a high priority option in Traffic and Highway Engineering. Trafic control by a system of traffic signal lights and variable message signs that can adapt to the changing environment is an essential part of such management scheme The multiprocessor architecture described in this paper maintains near neighbor connectivity and shares information via these near neighbor interconnections for calculation of optimum traffic plans. The near neighbor connectivity simplifies the expansion of the multiprocessor architecture with city developments

Abstract

Development of the hardware, firmware and control and monitoring software to interface the UNIROAD Traffic Signal Controller (TSC) to Advanced Traffic Control system (ATCS) is described. This system is capable of controlling and monitoring traffic signal controllers over a standard telephone link. It is specially developed at a low cost for third world countries such as Sri Lanka.

Abstract

The paper describes the design and implementation of a controller, which rotates an antenna in the optimum direction for reception of signals at the installed loca-tion. The antenna controller can be programmed on-site, with the direction of best reception for each channel. During operation, when a particular channel is selected, the controller will align the antenna in the direction to which it is programmed. This device is ideally suited for TV reception in Sri Lanka, where broadcast stations are placed at a variety of different geographic locations. However, the device is suitable for any application where a requirement exists for antenna re-aligning with geographic location.

A microcontroller based digital signal processing trainer for laboratory use

Digital Signal ProcessingEmbedded Systems and Computer Architecture

Abstract

The trainer provides facilities for two modes of signal processing: real time and non-real time. The microphone picks up the input signal which is amplified, converted to digital in the analog front end, and fed to the microcontroller. The analog front end also conditions the signal to be analysed as required.

Abstract

An array processor design methodology suitable for hard real-time systems is presented. Scheduling and projection of the dependence graph (DG) are solved using integer programming. By exploring the regularity of the DG it is possible to solve the necessary IP problems in an efficient manner. This methodology provides a unified approach for linear and nonlinear projection of regular and partially regular DGs.<>

Advances in Computer Graphics Hardware II

Embedded Systems and Computer ArchitectureHardware Acceleration and Co-design

Abstract

The material in this book documents the presented papers, the discussions and additional contributions triggered by the EUROGRAPHICS workshop on Graphics Hardware held at the annual conference EG'87 in Amsterdam. The first part considers Algorithmic Aspects of graphics systems realisation. It is worthwhile to note that besides" classical" topics like Hidden-line Elimination or Ray-Tracing, new results of computional geometry are presented in a hardware-oriented context. The second part on Subsystems describes hardware solutions for special tasks in the computer image generation pipeline, eg fast coordinate transformation and perspective projection. The last part addresses System Architecture. It demonstrates by rather different examples the wide range of possible and feasible solutions to build graphics hardware. Unlike the situation in graphics software where a common understanding and an accepted concept has been formed by the standardization process, many architectural options are still to be exploited and evaluated. Especially the interaction between VLSI opportunities, newly developed algorithms, and the increasing diversity of applications encourage again and again innovative solutions and keep graphics hardware a lively working area.

INTERFACING, FIELD DEVICE SUBSTITUTES TO CENTRAL, CONTROL, TERMINALS THROUGH INTERFACE CARDS

Abstract

In an integrated plant environment, it is not feasible to replace an existing field device with a different model unless the protocols are properly matched. The system complexity is a deterrent to a software modification in order to tackle the problem. A microcontroller based interface card would be an elegant solution. This card takes information from the new device and manipulates it dynamically so that the central controller can understand and vice versa. Due to the new features of microcontrollers, design and development of such cards are not intricate.

Abstract

The current water meters in Sri Lanka are manually read monthly, consuming more expenditure on human resources by the water board of Sri Lanka. As a solution to that problem, automating and digitizing the water meter can be presented. In order to read out the digits on the water meter more conveniently and effectively in a resource constrained environment, a low-cost imaged based direct reading system is presented in this paper. This system can automatically identify the digits on the water meter through a template matching algorithm. After recognizing the digits of the water meter reading, the processed meter reading output is transferred to a central server via Narrow-Band Internet of Things (NB-IoT) technology. Recently, NB-IoT is one of the most promising Low Power Wide Area technology which has attracted much attention from both academia and industry.
