Abstract

Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication plays a pivotal role in intelligent transport systems (ITS) with cellular-vehicle to everything (C-V2X) and IEEE 802.11p being the two competing enabling technologies. This paper presents multi-dimensional discrete-time Markov chain (DTMC) based models to study the medium access control (MAC) layer performance of the IEEE 802.11p standard and C-V2X Mode 4, considering periodic cooperative awareness messages (CAMs) and event-driven decentralized environmental notification messages (DENMs). Closed-form solutions for the steady-state probabilities of the models are obtained, which are then utilized to derive expressions for several key performance metrics. Numerical results are provided to draw insights on the performance. In particular, a performance comparison between IEEE 802.11p and C-V2X Mode 4 in terms of the average delay, the collision …

Abstract

This paper studies optimum detectors and error rate analysis for wireless systems with low-resolution quantizers in the presence of fading and noise. A universal lower bound on the average symbol error probability (SEP), correct for all M-ary modulation schemes, is obtained when the number of quantization bits is not enough to resolve M signal points. In the special case of M-ary phase shift keying (M-PSK), the maximum likelihood detector is derived. Utilizing the structure of the derived detector, a general average SEP expression for M-PSK modulation with n-bit quantization is obtained when the wireless channel is subject to fading with a circularly-symmetric distribution. For the Nakagami-m fading, it is shown that a transceiver architecture with n-bit quantization is asymptotically optimum in terms of communication reliability if n ≥ log 2 M + 1. That is, the decay exponent for the average SEP is the same and equal …

Abstract

Growing concerns over privacy invasion due to video camera based monitoring systems have made way to non-invasive Wi-Fi signal sensing based alternatives. This paper introduces a novel end-to-end deep learning framework that utilizes the changes in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) sub-carrier amplitude information to simultaneously predict the identity, activity and the trajectory of a user and create a user profile that is of similar utility to a one made through a video camera based approach. The novelty of the proposed solution is that the system is fully autonomous and requires zero user intervention unlike systems that require user originated initialization, or a user held transmitting device to facilitate the prediction. Experimental results demonstrate over 95% accuracy for user identification and activity recognition, while the user localization results exhibit a ±12cm error, which is a significant …

Abstract

The enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) mechanism enables IEEE 802.11p to accommodate differential quality of service (QoS) levels in vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications, through four access categories (ACs). This paper presents multi-dimensional discrete-time Markov chain (DTMC) based model to study the effect of parallel operation of the ACs on the medium access control (MAC) layer performance of ITS-G5 IEEE 802.11p. The overall model consists of four queue models with their respective traffic generators, which are appropriately linked with the DTMCs modeling the operation of each AC. Closed-form solutions for the steady-state probabilities of the models are obtained, which are then utilized to derive expressions for key performance indicators at the MAC layer. An application for a highway scenario is presented to draw insights on the performance. The results show how the …

Abstract

In this paper, we are concerned with indoor localization based on multiple-antenna channel measurements. Indoor localization is an active area of research due to its great importance in many applications. We propose a hybrid algorithm which combines the benefits of two techniques, namely signal processing and machine learning. We validate our algorithm based on real measurements acquired from two practical setups. Our approach shows a very promising performance in the IEEE CTW 2019 - Positioning Algorithm Competition where the algorithm achieves an accuracy within RMSE values below 10 cm. We further build a setup in another indoor environment, where the algorithm still proves a very good performance compared to state-of-the art techniques used in indoor localization tasks.

Abstract

The paper considers physical layer security (PLS) of an untrusted unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) network, where a multitude of UAVs communicate in full-duplex (FD) mode. A source-based jamming (SBJ) scheme is exploited for secure communication without utilizing any external jammers. Firstly, the optimal power allocation between the confidential signal and the jamming signal is derived to maximize the secrecy rate of each link between the source and the destination. Then, the best UAV selection scheme is proposed to maximize the overall secrecy rate of the network. The corresponding secrecy outage probability (SOP) and the average secrecy rate (ASR) of the network are analyzed based on the proposed UAV selection and the optimal power allocation schemes. Asymptotic results are also obtained to derive the achievable diversity order. Results are validated through numerical evaluations while …

Abstract

The response time of emergency vehicles (EVs) determines the outcome of many emergencies, thus improving the traversal time of EVs is of paramount importance. Vehicular communication is a key enabler of such an improvement. This paper studies two EV traversal algorithms, focusing mainly on their communication aspects. Fast moving dense traffic is modeled, and the traversal algorithms are implemented on top of the dedicated short-range communication (DSRC) / wireless access in vehicular environments (WAVE) protocol stack, while accounting for channel impairments such as path loss and fading. Algorithms that highlight the required packet transfers for the traversal and for safe lane changes are presented, and simulated in the VEINS framework for different traffic conditions. Simulation results show that the suitability of the EV traversal algorithms defer depending on the speed distribution of the …

Abstract

Indoor positioning by wireless means is of significant interest in a wide range of applications; Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) are popular candidate wireless technologies for this. We present a novel BLE beacon placement algorithm that complements existing Wi-Fi infrastructure in a hybrid Wi-Fi/BLE positioning system. Composite signal strength measurements thus obtained, are used to derive machine learning models for location estimation. Our results show that positioning estimates at table-level granularity (0.9 m × 1.8 m) in a computer laboratory can be achieved with 97% accuracy. This is an improvement of 20% and 30% compared to Wi-Fi and BLE only techniques respectively.

Abstract

A real-time directional sensing system is proposed for 2.4 GHz ISM band by exploiting the concept of spatiotemporal spectral white spaces. The proposed system consists of a 16-element patch antenna array, an FFT-based multi-beam beamformer and an energy detector. Our system operates at the baseband with quadrature sampling. Furthermore, digital architectures for two energy detectors that employ integrate-and-dump circuits are presented. With the multi-beam beamformer, the first energy detector can be employed to directional sensing and the second can be employed for both directional and spectral sensing of radio frequency sources. The multi-beam beamformer having 16 beams and the energy detectors are implemented on a ROACH-2 based FPGA system with a 160 MHz clock. Abstract

This paper proposes a spectrum selection scheme and a transmit power minimization scheme for a device-to-device (D2D) network cross-laid with a cloud radio access network (CRAN). The D2D communications are allowed as an overlay to the CRAN as well as in the unlicensed industrial, scientific and medical radio (ISM) band. A link distance based scheme is proposed and closed-form approximations are derived for the link distance thresholds to select the operating band of the D2D users. Furthermore, analytical expressions are derived to calculate the minimum required transmit power to achieve a guaranteed level of quality of service in each operating band. The results demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves nearly 50% power saving compared to a monolithic (purely overlay or purely ISM band) D2D network.

Abstract

A novel content caching strategy is proposed for a cache enabled device-to-device (D2D) network where the user devices are allowed to communicate using millimeter wave (mmWave) D2D links (> 6GHz) as well as conventional sub 6 GHz cellular links. The proposed content placement strategy maximizes the successful content delivery probability of a line of sight D2D link. Furthermore, a heuristic algorithm is proposed for efficient content delivery. The overall scheme improves the successful traffic offloading gain of the network compared to conventional cache-hit maximizing content placement and delivery strategies. Significant energy efficiency improvements can also be achieved in ultra-dense networks.

Abstract

This paper presents an analytical framework to investigate the performance of full duplex (FD) device-to-device (D2D) networks where devices in a cluster are capable of caching popular content. Assuming spatially randomly distributed D2D users in the cluster where the users request for content according to the Zipf distribution, analytical expressions are derived for the device communication probability, coverage probability, cluster average spectral efficiency, and content average download latency of the system. The system performance metrics are derived for the three device operating modes of FD only mode, half duplex (HD) only mode, and mixed FD/HD mode. Numerical results show that the mixed FD/HD mode is the most appropriate communication mode for cache enabled FD D2D networks to achieve the highest cluster average spectral efficiency and low content average download latency.

Wireless CommunicationsStatistical Signal Processing and Estimation

Abstract

This paper proposes a novel channel estimation method and a cluster-based opportunistic scheduling policy, for a wireless energy transfer (WET) system consisting of multiple low-complex energy receivers (ERs) with limited processing capabilities. Firstly, in the training stage, the energy transmitter (ET) obtains a set of Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) feedback values from all ERs, and these values are used to estimate the channels between the ET and all ERs. Next, based on the channel estimates, the ERs are grouped into clusters, and the cluster that has its members closest to its centroid in phase is selected for dedicated WET. The beamformer that maximizes the minimum harvested energy among all ERs in the selected cluster is found by solving a convex optimization problem. All ERs have the same chance of being selected regardless of their distances from the ET, and hence, this scheduling …

Abstract

This paper proposes and analyzes a distance-based duplex mode switching scheme for maximizing the average throughput of a cellular network and its underlay device-to-device (D2D) network. For each duplex mode of the cellular network, a node distance based duplex mode selection scheme is proposed to maximize the throughput of the D2D network. The proposed duplex mode selection scheme provides average throughput improvements in the range of 10%-200% for the D2D network compared to the always half-duplex and always full-duplex communications for high D2D user scatter variances.

Abstract

Due to high costs at initiation, alternative communication strategies to dedicated short range communication (DSRC) have been looked at to facilitate quick deployment of intelligent transportation services. Wi-Fi Direct (WD), has come across as a candidate, and this paper focuses on the drawback of large transmission delays in WD. To this end, it studies the performance gains of using a broadcast mechanism on the downlink between the group owner (GO) and the clients of a WD group, instead of the currently used peer-to-peer method. Gains in terms of average total delay and the average energy consumption of the GO are presented using a theoretical analysis as well as a simulation study using OMNeT++. It is also shown that the degradation in performance on the downlink due to not having retransmissions is within tolerable limits given that the size of the group is selected properly.

Abstract

This paper focuses on wireless energy transfer (WET) to a pair of low complex energy receivers (ER), by only utilizing received signal strength indicator (RSSI) values that are fed back from the ERs to the energy transmitter (ET). Selecting the beamformer that maximizes the total average energy transfer between the ET and the ERs, while satisfying a minimum harvested energy criterion at each ER, is studied. This is a non-convex constrained optimization problem which is difficult to solve analytically. Also, any analytical solution to the problem should only consists of parameters that the ET knows, or the ET can estimate, as utilizing only RSSI feedback values for channel estimation prohibits estimating some channel parameters. Thus, the paper focuses on obtaining a suboptimal solution analytically. It is proven that if the channels between the ET and the ERs satisfy a certain sufficient condition, this solution is in fact …

Abstract

Multiple antenna techniques that allow energy beamforming have been looked upon as a possible candidate for increasing the transfer efficiency between the energy transmitter (ET) and the energy receiver in wireless power transfer. This paper introduces a novel scheme that facilitates energy beamforming by utilizing received signal strength indicator (RSSI) values to estimate the channel. First, in the training stage, the ET will transmit using each beamforming vector in a codebook, which is predefined using a Cramer-Rao lower bound analysis. RSSI value corresponding to each beamforming vector is fed back to the ET, and these values are used to estimate the channel through a maximum likelihood analysis. The results that are obtained are remarkably simple, requires minimal processing, and can be easily implemented. Abstract

A throughput analysis is conducted for a large scale peer-to-peer wireless network whose devices are capable of operating in both full- and half-duplex modes, using the tools of stochastic geometry. Each device selects its operating duplex mode based on the distance to its partner node. In both duplex modes, the energy consumption and the hardware configurations of the nodes are made equivalent for fair comparisons between full-duplex and half-duplex operations. Using the results of the analysis, an approach is proposed to determine a distance threshold value for duplex mode selection, and the proposed distance threshold can be computed offline. It is found that the throughput performance of the hybrid full-/half-duplex network generated with the proposed distance threshold based duplex mode selection technique outperforms both the pure half-duplex and pure full-duplex network settings for most …

Abstract

We consider a single-input-single-output (SISO) system with quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulation and derive an easy-to-evaluate expression for the symbol error probability (SEP) when a general n-bit phase quantization is used at the receiver. We further evaluate the expressions asymptotically to characterize the diversity order and the quantization penalty at high signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). We observe that the system with n-bit phase quantization achieves full diversity order of one when n > 2. Numerical examples are used to verify the analysis.
